INTRODUCTION

Rainwater harvesting is a method of arresting rainwater and keeping it in reserve for future utility.

  • To increase the water table by rejuvenating groundwater.
  • To curtail the water crisis. 
  • To stay away from flooding of roads.
  • To reduce surface runoff loss.


HOW TO HARVEST RAINWATER?

Before executing rainwater harvesting, the following parameters should be checked, like climatic conditions, soil characteristics, etc. In general, the rooftop rainwater method is used. Rainwater from the top roof is collected in a pit through a PVC pipe.
A simple rainwater harvesting system mainly consists of three units a collection area, a conveyance system such as pipes, and a storage tank. This method is suitable for places where the annual rainfall is above 400mm/year. It is a very economical and productive technique for metropolitan cities and buildings.

GUIDELINES FOR MAINTAINING RAINWATER HARVESTING 

  • Regularly check and clean the storage tank. Chlorine solution is used for cleaning and rinsing the tanks.
  • Protect the surface from insects and pests.


USES OF  RAINWATER HARVESTING

It helps in increasing the groundwater level. It helps in reducing soil erosion and flood risks.  The future generation is guaranteed with water.
